Adjusting Camera Settings On Mavic 2 Pro

Introduction:

Mavic 2 Pro
When doing any sort of photography it is  important to use the proper camera settings in order to capture the image to fit your needs. This is just as true when doing aerial photography using Unmanned Aerial Systems. The following exercise was done in the Niswonger Hanger of the Future at Purdue University- Main Campus. The purpose of the exercise was to test the different camera settings of a camera used on a UAV, in this case a Mavic 2 Pro, as shown on the right.

Method:

First, we found the aircraft we would like to use as our subject, in our case it was a helicopter in the hanger. Next we found a stable counter to deploy our stationary UAV onto. From there we synced the UAV up to our controller so that we could began taking photographs. Then we began taking photographs; initially we took a photo with just then auto settings, and from there we changed one setting(ISO, Shutter speed, and Aperture), at a time from one extreme to the other to show how changing their values affects the picture. Afterwords we uploaded photographs that show incremental differences for each value, keeping the other settings at their default value. The photographs were labeled with their setting values are are shown below.

Discussion:

As one can see from the photographs above, when changing the different values of each setting, it changes how the image looks. Going from one extreme to the other without adjusting the other values will make most images unusable. Knowing this, it is important to adjust values accordingly with the other in order to get the best image for the task you are trying to accomplish.

Conclusion:

When filming either by hand or via UAV, it is important to know what each setting on a camera does, and how it will affect the picture you are taking. If you do not you can easily waste the time of yourself, or your client by having to readjust your camera and retake the photographs you need. By understanding how the setting coincide with each other, you will be a much more effective photographer no matter what your task is.
